I need some good cymbals.
« on: February 22, 2010, 02:46:26 PM »
The ones I have are total junk and I want a better set. Don't even ask what kind they are, just crap. Like hitting posts and pans.

Can anyone recommend some good ones?

I was looking at the Zildjian A Customs, but for $700 (at least) for a set seems a little to much for what I am looking to do.

But at the same time I don't want junk (which is what I have now).

Is there anything decent that won't break the bank? Or should have go for the A Customs?

The magic in the studio is created when the three of us are there TOGETHER, working on parts, discussing, sometimes arguing, all pushing the album forward. Trying to frankenstein a cd together by mailing each other pro tools files to work on in our own private studios was ridiculous. It would lessen the entire album. It would be a terrible cd"...............Mark Hoppus.

What's your budget?  Like $300 for 3-4 cymbals?

Yeah, that's about right, $300-$400.

obviously a cymbal pack would be the best value.  just depend on sound you like, and how much you want to spend after that.

I'll present three options here now.

Sabian's XS-20 line has been revamped for a more professional look and sound. They're not pro quality, but are easier on the wallet, But for the weekend warrior, they're perfect.

If you have your heart set on a professional set of cymbals - you're going to need something versatile. I'd recommend a pair of Sabian AAX Stage Hats, 17" AAX Dark Crash and a 20" AAX Studio Ride.

If you like the darker, vintage sound but don't want to break the bank, try out dream cymbals. They're super lower priced than the big 3 cymbal companies and dont sacrifice any quality. Jazzers and vintage buffs alike are raging about this company, and I'm dying to try some out myself.

Can't or won't? Either?

Thanks!!!

The Sabian XS-20's seem to be exactly what I am looking for. They are in my price range and according to reviews you don't take that much of a hit on quality.

I could get the Zildjian A Customs, but I don't see a point in getting $700 professional cymbals when I am only playing the drums in my house for fun.

I'd go with the Sabians as well. I used to have a full set of Sabian Pro Sonix and for the price they were awesome. I don't really keep up with drumming stuff anymore since I sold my kit but I think the XS-20's replaced the Pro Sonix?

If you're not gonna be touring or recording getting the Zildjians would be a huge waste of money.

I'd say they're a step up from the sonix actually, but the sonix have been discontinued anyway.

Oli, if you have your heart set on Zildjian, try the ZHT range. They're basically the same level as XS-20s. But I'm pretty sure the Sabians have a wider selection, and Sabian now offers a 2 yr warranty on all models - where as Zildjian doesn't.

i'm a total Meinl guy. i've tried so many cymbals but i always got back to Meinl because of their awesome awesome sound. currently, i have a 20" and a 19" MB10 crash set up and i love them so much but they're probably too expensive for your needs. but you might as well try them though

Seriously, your best bet it to shop ebay for whatever your looking for.

i've been playing for 7-8yrs, and i have purchased all my current cymbals from U.S ebay for 1/3 of the price id pay for them here in australia.d pay Yes, i purchased them being used but thats no difference in going to a drum store and picking one off the shelf (thats been hit 2000 times)

You can pick up amazing deals on any brand - Sabian, Zildjian, Meinl, Paiste. But if your looking for something that wont break the bank..then pick up some used XS-20's, ZHT, or something along those lines since you are only 'mucking around' with them in your garage.

You should still have some money left over if you use that method

Online can be great. But I only trust sites like cymbalsonly.com and stuff. The cymbal you hear in the clip is the cymbal you get, which is handy.

I don't like buying used because it's a lot of dough to throw down for something you'll be smacking without a little bit of reassurance. Not that I break cymbals, but it's nice to know it's there.
