I think all of the posts in this thread have been good based on talent.  But I do think personality matters, especially if we're talking about representing an entire generation.  How the musician deals with the media and fans should be important, which is a huge knock I have on Thom Yorke, Kanye West, and Tom DeLonge.  You can tell that Dave Grohl just loves what he does and is so happy doing it, and will continue doing so until the day that he dies.
