for the starter of this thread (i dont remember ur name) ...fuckin awesome post.  It's so true, if the lyrics arent heartfelt they mean dick.  Even joke songs need 2 have a connection to you, any song w/o any emotional connection at all isn't going to sound good at all...awesome post! :D

hey man, great thread,i had a friend that got hit by a car and he died.i write about things like that, definately things that have happened to you or mean something to you,or a medothoric thing, like tom wrote a song about dying and not being able to talk to jen and its got great lyrics,i try to imagine myself in a situation(loved one leaving etc)and think about how i would feel and i put that into my lyrics.i find it tough to write about friends dying.i once wrote a song about feeling guilty, that was a good one!anyway real good thread and thanks for the tips!
'I'm so cold, Don't wanna' take,
My chances without you,
I'll take hold, Of anything,
Thats keeping me with you'

well,i would think of something that means something to you,eg a girl or something,or think of a hypothetical situation and just think about feelings and key points of it,look at the situation from different views and then write down key words or sentences and try to work from those,eg,i wrote a song about breaking up with a girl, but its seven years after the break up so i wrote the after effects, heres a few lines,

Seven years have passed,
The pictures slowly fade,
We never had a chance,
The memories become vague,
Sleeping on the floor,
You've had better days,
You hope for something more,
For the feelings now mislaid

theyre not the best lyrics sure but once you get them you can work on them changing words etc.its about the memory of me fading away in her mind.as for the guitar, just keep on practicing and eventually itll come naturally.
'I'm so cold, Don't wanna' take,
My chances without you,
I'll take hold, Of anything,
Thats keeping me with you'

Hmm, I forgot about this thread. Oh well, instead of typing up something new, I'll just quote myself from a related topic:

Quote from: hyler

Quite frankly, most people will tell you that you need to take your stongest emotions that you feel, whatever is on your mind, if your going through hard times, etc. and make them the basis of your song.

That is one of the biggest loads of crap I have ever heard. Most of my songs don't carry lyrics, but some do. Lyrics are meant to do one thing and one thing alone, "Convey Emotion". At the end of the day, nobody is going to remember what you said, how you played, the melody of the song, or what the lyrics were, they're just going to remember the way you made them feel.

Writing lyrics before your song is one of the worst things you can do, usually that is the key step to creating a bad song. See, it's possible to write lyrics to a instrumental piece that makes you feel a certain way, but to write an emotional instrumental piece to accompany lyrics that are meant to make someone feel a certain way is damned near impossible, but a lot of people do it, but there songs lack because of it.

Write out an instrumental piece that conveys a certain emotion and makes you feel a certain way, then once you feel that way, write lyrics about how that song makes you feel, and what it makes you think about. If you do that, then your lyrics and your song with both be conveying the same emotion and therefor have a much much stronger affect on your listener. If your lyrics were about losing someone, but your song conveys the emotion of happiness, then it's not going to have a big impact on your listeners.

If you get a chance, listen to some work by Koji Kondo. He conveys strong emotions in some of his work without ever saying a word.

Back in 1835, when Halley's Comet was overhead, same night those men died at the Alamo, they say Samuel Colt made a gun. A special gun. Story goes, he made thirteen bullets. This hunter used the gun a half dozen times before he disappeared, the gun along with him. They say... they say this gun can kill anything.......

Songwritting means so much to me, because it helps me to get clear about my feelings and thoughts (damn, i think this sentence is no correct English^^). Untill a special day i just wrote songs for fun about a man who has always sex with his cat or about bad partys, i regret to was there. But then i started writting songs about my own experiences and feelings and hey - these lyrics are so much better than the old. For example a girl i realy liked (now i still like her the same , but i know that i'm such an idiot because of that) played with my feelings and spend an amazing night with me, but then she said something like "I'm sorry Tom, it was a pretty cool night, but i don't feel more than friendship for you." Oh, this situation sucked so much and i think my best song is about exactly this time and this girl. Maybe i'll show her the text in some weeks^^.
Quote from: Blink 182 - Degenerate
...Nude in a gutter is how I was found
Thrown in a police car and the door slammed
No noise just silence as I screamed my dick was jammed...

Please excuse my bad english. I'm from Germany and learning this language since six years now. I think there will be a lot of mistakes in my comments..

Only a dead pancake is a good pancake.
